Mentors

VMSA provides an opportunity for business leaders to give back through an enriching and rewarding mentorship experience. VMSA Mentors are driven by seeing others succeed and want to build the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders by helping them unlock their own potential.

In addition to supporting local entrepreneurs, the team mentorship model allows Mentors to learn from one-another; growing and developing their own coaching and mentorship skills in the process.

All VMSA Mentors receive best-in-class mentorship and coaching training.

A COACHING APPROACH

To Mentorship

COACH

A coach guides, asks questions, and focuses on helping the individual achieve their highest potential. Coaches focus on asking the right questions that can challenge, inspire, or liberate an entrepreneur, but keeps the decision-making with the Mentee.

ADVISOR

An advisor provides direction, advice, and problem solving often around specific business challenges. Advisors usually have focus areas where they have grown their specific knowledge and offer direct solutions.

VMSA Mentors take a coaching approach to mentorship.

We do not advise mentees on how to run their business, but rather ask the right questions that help mentees think deeper about themselves and their growth. We ask the questions that help people see things with perspective they may not have considered, and that drive people to come to their own conclusions and solve their own problems.

The coaching approach keeps the ownership of the strategy and decision-making with the mentee. We believe this develops deeper strategic thinking within the entrepreneur.

Like any skill, coaching takes training and practice. All VMSA Mentors are provided with high-level coaching training, giving them the tools and frameworks needed to have effective coaching conversations.

- MENTOR -

Is a title earned through a relationship built on openness and trust. All our volunteers have earned this title. A Mentor is not a paid position nor does the individual have any vested interest in the venture, ensuring there is absolutely no conflict of interest present in the relationship. A Mentor will use the tools of coaching, advising, and instructing to assist a mentee.

“I have received great value in the learnings from my mentees and co-mentors. This has been an unexpected benefit of mentoring with VMSA”

Brian Donaldson

Looking back on my own career, being a leader was often a lonely experience. VMSA has given me the opportunity to support the next generation of entrepreneurs, and work alongside them as they become stronger, more sustainable leaders within our community. It's an incredible privilege to help founders grow into the best leaders they can be.

Stephanie Wright

Volunteering as Mentor has been a highly rewarding experience for me to accompany an entrepreneur on their journey while they grow their business and develop their leadership. I particularly like the team mentorship approach as it fosters good discussions and broader perspectives. The coaching received from the VMSA program not only helps me be a better Mentor, I have also seen its impact in my personal life.

Johanne Audet

Think you know someone who would be a great Mentor?

  • Kenny Doleac

I started my career as an officer in the US Army, flying Blackhawk helicopters and leading teams both in the US and in Iraq. I view these as my formative leadership years, where I learned to both tackle both technical and team challenges in demanding environments. One of the most important lessons being that one must truly care about, I would say love, people in order to be a great leader. After seven years in the military and two tours in Iraq, I left the Army and went back to school to get an MBA at Kellogg School of Management and an MPA at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as a way to re-tool myself for the business world.

Next, I joined Apple, working in new product development on the operations side where I had the opportunity to bring MacBook and AirPod products to market. I worked extensively with the engineering teams and lead the operations and supply chain teams in both Cupertino and China.  After my wife and I had our first daughter, we decided we wanted to move closer to family which turned our attention toward Calgary, where my wife’s family lives.  I joined Attabotics, a start-up in the industrial automation and robotics sector, leading the engineering, supply chain and product teams.  I really enjoyed the challenge of working in a small company and the chance set direction for both the organization and the product.  Service to others has always been a core aspect of my life and the desire to serve again brought me to VMSA, where I am excited to have the opportunity to coach and share my experience with entrepreneurs in the local community.

  • Ashleigh Patterson

I am a recovering entrepreneur that has made a successful transition to Corporate America. I co-founded an engineering and manufacturing company and spent nine years growing it into a successful global business. As a Vice-President I was involved in all aspects of the business that included developing the corporate strategy, managing the day-to-day operations, and spearheading our business development efforts. Along the way I established manufacturing processes, designed products, and built shipping crates when the need arose (I am surprisingly skilled with a nail gun).

I was offered an incredible opportunity to join Mercedes-Benz Research & Development where I enjoyed operating as something of an "intrapreneur". I managed a multi-disciplinary team responsible for designing future mobility products and services. After co-leading the transformation of the Innovation group, I built our ideation process and team from the ground up. I have introduced design-thinking techniques, optimized our product portfolio, increased the fidelity of the business models, and created metrics that measure and drive success of the group. I was then recruited by Porsche Digital to design digital products and services for the iconic Porsche brand using customer-centric, data driven innovation techniques.

My journey in product continues at Shareworks by Morgan Stanley where I lead the product management organization in the development of an industry leading fintech platform.

The second career was focused on wildlife conservation, in his role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Calgary Zoo.

Great leaders ask great questions, amazing leaders listen very closely to the response. Greg managed his first hotel in 1973 at the ripe old age of twenty-one. In 1975 he and his brother’s opened their first hotel in Red Deer Alberta. In the next twenty-five years they built, and or purchased well known hotels such as; The Grand Okanagan Resort, The Banff Rocky Mountain Resort, The Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre in London Ontario and approximately 80 other hotels.
